  • “The way a car is designed—I find them very seductive, very sensual. It’s something that you can really get into. And they’re fast, they’re strong,” said Phoebe Philo, describing her fascination with the strength and seductive power of cars for Céline’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection.

    On her approach, she tells fashion critic Suzy Menkes: “Streamlined and reduced—and a lot of interiors of cars.” The wood- and leather-clad interiors were translated into motifs in the ready-to-wear. A series of separates, including this button-up shirt, featured a deep brown wood grain—the only print shown on the runway that season—echoing lacquered wooden dashboards of vintage automobiles.

    Cut to a regular fit, the shirt’s front and sleeves highlight the rich wood-grain print, while the pointed collar and concealed button placket use a slightly deeper variation. The back is cut from jet-black wool–silk for contrast. Inside, the shirt is bonded with a napped lining for comfort and warmth, with the edges satin-stitched in black thread.
