  • Phoebe Philo’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection—her first runway show for Celine—focused on practical, pared-back garments made in honest, hard-wearing materials like crepe, gabardine, and leather, using only a concise palette of camel, khaki, white, and black.

    A notable way she used leather was through a series of quilted pieces, which included this fitted jacket in black lambskin.

    The quilting is done in close parallel stitches; their pattern and direction complement and follow the body’s lines and movements (it is different at the shoulders than at the sleeves, for instance). A concealed metal zip at the front curves toward the hem, where a peplum with front pockets is set.

    The dense stitching throughout the leather encourages it to naturally develop creases over time.
