  • Prada’s Fall/Winter 1996 seemed much in conversation with the now-iconic “ugly chic” collection that preceded it, taking a similar approach of using restrained, archetypal silhouettes disrupted by an odd color palette and eccentric choices of print.

    This peacoat follows that formula: a notched lapel collar above an overlapping single-breasted front with inseam front pockets—a classic garment by design.

    What defines the coat is its all-over U-motif print, a recurring graphic in the collection. The print’s interlocking forms are hand-drawn in colored marker, in varying shades of brown, camel and yellow. Leather trim on the collar, cuffs, and buttonholes adds subtle contrast in texture and protects the edges from wear and tear.

    The coat is a study in minimal interference: instead of reworking the garment, Prada lets the print do the work.
