  • This dress was shown as part of Céline's Winter 2018 collection, produced by Phoebe Philo's design studio in the interim period following her departure from the French house.

    Made of soft, napped wool jersey with a satiny reverse side, the dress features a round neckline with ties on a center slit. Sunray pleats—knitted directly into the jersey rather than heat-set—cascade from the front and back collar, gradually widening as they reach the hemline. The generous amount of fabric on this dress naturally creates dramatic volume and flare when the wearer moves.

    This dress appears to be a modern interpretation of American sportswear designer Claire McCardell's "Monastic" dress designed in 1938. Key differences in Céline's version reflect contemporary sensibilities: a collarless neckline, longer hemline and sleeves, and more fitted armholes. Both dresses include an extra-long waist tie that can be wrapped doubly around the body, allowing the wearer to adjust the silhouette from shapeless to closely fitted. Unlike the McCardell piece where the tie is attached along the underbust, this dress features a completely removable waist tie.
