  • For Fall 1999, Miuccia Prada described her collection as “the country in a crazy way” and “modern pieces for evening”; nature seen through a slightly disturbed, urban lens. At the time, not everyone was convinced.

    In her review “Obscure Prada Lost in the Woods” for the International Herald Tribune, fashion critic Suzy Menkes said the show looked confused: skirts covered in leaves, strange colors, cartoon bugs, and shoes she called some of the most awful in fashion. She framed it as a misstep from a house that had defined 1990s modernity.

    The buying public have clearly had a different opinion of that collection. Pieces from that season have gone on to red carpets and celebrities' wardrobes soon after the show, and today they are among the most sought-after for fashion collectors.

    Worn by a 19-year-old Gisele Bündchen on the runway, this straight, midi-length skirt is a clear example. Cut from bright orange Shetland wool, the skirt's bottom half is dotted with clusters of laser-cut neon purple plastic leaves. Shiny cartoon beetles in patent leather are scattered, as if they’re crawling up the fabric. Copper brown herringbone twill tape wraps around the edge.
