  • In Céline’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Phoebe Philo explored the power of quietly radical dressing for the everyday.

    On these leather trousers, that quiet radicality was expressed through its defining feature: a harness belt with long snap-button straps that connect to eyelets on the trousers’ waistband. It helps hold the trousers in place and, in doing so, emphasizes the waist. The straps can be doubled back through the eyelets to shorten them, or the entire belt can be left to hang loose, as worn on the runway.

    Pinched seams run down the front and back legs, which are cut to a slightly cropped flare—a pragmatic length that also frames the shoes, as shown on the runway where the trousers were styled with both large boots and strappy sandals.

    Taken together, these features sum up the collection’s proposition: clothes designed for real use, with an understated quirk informed by function.
