  • Shown in Phoebe Philo’s first runway show for Céline, this cross-laced dress embodies the collection’s proposition of utilitarian shapes in honest, hardwearing materials, underscored by references to military outerwear.

    Constructed from sturdy camel-brown cotton gabardine, the dress features lambskin leather laces on the lace-up collar, which allows the neckline to be loosened as desired. Wide short sleeves and a sack-shaped silhouette offer ease of movement.

    Faint rectangles on the front outlined by stitch holes suggest previously attached pockets; an indication of a seemingly repurposed garment.

    The lace-up collar and vestiges of pockets point toward loose army smocks as a potential design inspiration, much like those worn by the British Army during World War II.
