  • For Spring/Summer 2018, Phoebe Philo looked back to the late-’70s and early-’80s Céline woman on Avenue Foch: pleated skirts, grown-up glamour, a sense of ease and pride in getting dressed. Those ideas came through in the collection’s opening skirt suits: oversized tailored blazers paired with pleated skirts like this one.

    Cut in box-pleated wool gabardine, the skirt has a wrap front that creates a double layer of pleats, and a slight asymmetry at the hem.

    On the waist, a gold horsebit buckle is secured onto the lambskin leather trim that runs around the waistband, appearing as if a buckled belt has been affixed directly onto the skirt’s waist.

    The gold brass hardware recalls the house’s earlier equestrian codes: the “Sulky” horse carriage motifs of the mid-1960s, and the metal horsebit accents that appeared soon after in the early ‘70s.

    On this skirt, that history isn’t just decorative. The bit actually closes the wrap front—turning an archival motif into working hardware.
